Information warfare: AI-mediated conflict in the eyes of the public

6 ottobre, Guerra e comunicazione, 2:56:51

Daria Arkhipova, UNITO

AI recommendations and other AI tools can be used as a weapon in information warfare. This is a weapon of facts, words, and images that can create environments that alter users’ perceptions of reality. Created as a world that candidly transmits personal experiences and opinions, Social media profoundly impact their users’ perception of facts and experiences of the world they would not have reached otherwise. From the first days of the conflict on Ukrainian territory, both sides, pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian digital content creators, actively used the tools of Social media alongside AI recommendations to influence the publics’ opinions and social values around it. For more than a year and a half, this conflict has been lived and faced by directly affected citizens and shared through digital environments. Today it is possible to talk about the impact it has on passive participants who are sharing the experience of the direct participant through Social media.
